History and Significance
CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) was founded in 1954 as a European organization for nuclear research to unite European scientists after World War II. Today, CERN is the world's largest particle physics laboratory with 23 member states and over 17,000 scientists from 110+ countries.
CERN's most famous achievement is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – the world's most powerful particle accelerator, built in a 27-kilometer underground tunnel 100 meters deep beneath the Swiss-French border. In 2012, the Higgs boson was discovered at the LHC – the elementary particle that gives mass to all other particles, earning Peter Higgs and François Englert the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Another revolutionary invention from CERN is the World Wide Web (WWW), created in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee as a system for sharing information among scientists. Today's internet as we know it is a direct result of this invention.
CERN Science Gateway
In October 2023, CERN opened Science Gateway – a new 7,000 m² visitor space designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano (creator of Centre Pompidou in Paris and The Shard in London). Science Gateway is a free educational center that makes science accessible to everyone.
Architecture:
Science Gateway consists of three tubular buildings connected by bridges, with a wooden facade and a green roof with photovoltaic panels. The design symbolizes particle accelerators and CERN's tunnels.
5 Permanent Exhibitions:
1.Our Universe
Explore the origin and evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang to today. Interactive displays show how CERN studies fundamental particles and forces.
1.Quantum World
Immerse yourself in the strange world of quantum physics, where particles can be in two places at once and "teleport." Live experiments demonstrate quantum phenomena.
1.Big Bang
Understand how the Large Hadron Collider recreates conditions from the first microseconds after the Big Bang to reveal the secrets of matter and energy.
1.Antimatter
Learn about antimatter – the mirror image of matter that annihilates upon contact with ordinary matter. CERN is the only place in the world where antimatter is produced and studied.
1.Accelerators
Discover how particle accelerators work – the giant machines that accelerate protons to 99.9999991% of the speed of light and collide them to reveal the structure of matter.
What to See and Do
1. Science Gateway Exhibitions
Spend 2-3 hours exploring the 5 interactive exhibitions. Each exhibition is designed to be accessible to visitors aged 8+, from those with no scientific background to experts.
Location: Science Gateway
Admission: Free (registration required)
Time: 2-3 hours
Suitable for: All ages (8+)
2. Guided Tours at CERN
Free guided tours take you to real CERN experiments. You can see:
•ATLAS - One of the four LHC detectors, as big as a seven-story building
•Antimatter Factory - Where antimatter is produced
•Computing Centre - Where petabytes of data are processed
•Superconducting Magnet Test Facility - Where superconducting magnets are tested
Location: Various CERN facilities
Admission: Free (advance booking required)
Duration: 2-3 hours
Note: Tours depend on LHC operational schedule
How to Book:
•Individual/Family Tours: Book 1 hour in advance via web app at Science Gateway (first-come, first-served)
