Detailed Information about aareschlucht

Geology and Formation

The gorge is the result of thousands of years of erosion. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, melting glaciers released enormous amounts of water that carved their way through the limestone rock formation called the "Kirchet." This process created the present-day gorge, which is 1.4 km long and reaches depths of up to 200 meters. At its narrowest point, the gorge is only 1-2 meters wide.
