History

Arosa has a rich history dating back to the 13th century when it was a small mountain settlement in the Schanfigg Valley. The name comes from the Latin "ad rosetum" (to the rose gardens), probably related to the alpine roses that bloom in the region. In the 19th century, Arosa was discovered as a climatic health resort thanks to its clean mountain air and sunny climate. Doctors from all over Europe sent patients with lung diseases to be treated here. The first hotel was built in 1883, and the first cable car in 1933. In the 20th century, Arosa developed as a ski resort, while retaining its quiet and family-friendly character. In 2013, Arosa was connected to Lenzerheide by a new cable car, creating one of the largest ski areas in Graubünden. Today, Arosa is known as a car-free resort with a focus on sustainable tourism and nature conservation.

Economy

Arosa's economy is almost entirely based on tourism, which is well-balanced between the winter and summer seasons. Winter tourism, focused on skiing and snowboarding, is the main pillar, but summer tourism is growing rapidly with a focus on hiking, wellness, and family activities. Arosa is positioned as a premium destination with numerous luxury hotels and spa centers, including the world-famous Tschuggen Grand Hotel with its architecturally remarkable spa designed by Mario Botta. The resort actively invests in sustainable tourism and has received numerous awards for environmental initiatives. The car-free status of the village contributes to the clean air and peaceful atmosphere.

Culture and Traditions

Arosa retains its Alpine traditions, despite its modern development as a tourist destination. The locals speak Romansh and German, and the traditional culture of Graubünden is visible in the architecture, cuisine, and festivals. In winter, the famous Arosa Humorfestival takes place – one of the largest comedy festivals in Europe, attracting thousands of visitors. In summer, there are traditional Alpine festivals with folk music and dancing. The gastronomy combines traditional Graubünden dishes like Capuns (chard stuffed with dough and meat), Bündnerfleisch (air-dried meat), and Maluns (grated potatoes) with international cuisine. The Heimatmuseum Arosa-Schanfigg tells the history of the region through the centuries.

Ski Schools and Children's Programs

Arosa is an extremely family-friendly resort with excellent opportunities for learning and children's programs. The Swiss Ski School Arosa has highly qualified instructors who speak multiple languages. Group and private lessons are offered for all ages and levels. For the little ones, there are special children's areas with gentle slopes, fun elements, and mascots. The "Honigland" children's ski park is specially designed for children aged 3 to 6. Many hotels offer kids' clubs and childcare programs. There are also specialized programs for snowboarding, freestyle, and competitive skiing for advanced children and teenagers.
