History
Engelberg (in German "Mountain of Angels") was founded in 1120 when Benedictine monks established a monastery in this remote Alpine valley. For centuries, the monastery was the spiritual and economic center of the region. The monks developed agriculture, animal husbandry, and cheese production. In the 19th century, Engelberg began to attract tourists, enchanted by the majestic mountains. The first hotel was built in 1856. In 1898, the cogwheel railway from Lucerne to Engelberg was opened, making the village much more accessible. In 1913, the first cable car to Gerschnialp was built, and in 1927 – to Trübsee. The big breakthrough came in 1992 when the rotating ROTAIR cable car to the summit of Titlis was opened – the first in the world. Today, Engelberg is a modern Alpine resort that manages to preserve its authentic character and the spiritual heritage of the monastery.
Economy
The economy of Engelberg is based primarily on tourism. The resort attracts over 1 million visitors annually – both winter sports enthusiasts and summer tourists. Titlis Bergbahnen (the cable cars) is the largest employer in the region. In addition to tourism, agriculture also plays an important role – especially dairy farming and cheese production. The monastery continues to produce cheese and other products using traditional methods.
Culture and Traditions
Engelberg combines deep religious traditions with modern Alpine culture. The monastery is a spiritual center that organizes concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events. Every year, traditional festivals are held such as Älplerchilbi (Alpine herdsmen's festival) and Klausjagen (traditional procession for St. Nicholas). The cuisine is typical of Central Switzerland with an emphasis on dairy products – cheeses, butter, cream. Traditional dishes are Älplermagronen (Alpine macaroni with cheese and potatoes) and Käsefondue (fondue).
Ski Schools and Children's Programs
Engelberg offers excellent opportunities for ski and snowboard instruction. The Swiss Ski School Engelberg has experienced instructors who speak multiple languages. For children, there are special programs in the Kids Village at Trübsee – a safe and fun environment for first steps in skiing. There are also kids' clubs with animators where parents can leave their children while they ski. For advanced skiers, there are specialized programs for freeride and freestyle.
