Detailed Information about leukerbad

Leukerbad is a place with a rich history, a unique culture, and an economy entirely dedicated to the well-being of its guests. Here is a more detailed look at what makes Leukerbad so special:

General Information

Location: Canton of Valais, Switzerland Altitude: 1,411 m (Leukerbad), up to 2,800 m (Torrent) Population: ~1,500 Language: German (Swiss dialect), French Currency: Swiss Franc (CHF)

History

The history of Leukerbad is inextricably linked to its thermal springs, which were known to the Romans. The first written records of the baths date back to 1315. Over the centuries, Leukerbad has been visited by many famous people who have sought healing and inspiration in the healing waters. Among them are Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Guy de Maupassant, and Mark Twain. The latter even described his experiences in Leukerbad in his book "A Tramp Abroad".

The Gemmi Pass also plays an important role in the history of the region, having been an important trade route. Legend has it that even Sherlock Holmes passed through here in the story "The Final Problem".

The modern history of the resort began in the 20th century with the construction of hotels and lifts. In 1993, the Leukerbad Therme was opened, which turned Leukerbad into the largest thermal resort in the Alps and confirmed its status as a year-round destination.

Economy

The economy of Leukerbad is entirely focused on tourism, which is evenly distributed between the winter and summer seasons. The thermal baths are the main driver of the economy, attracting over 1 million visitors annually. The resort is also known for its medical tourism, with several rehabilitation clinics that use the healing properties of the water.

Agriculture also has its place, with the production of local cheeses, cured meats, and wines. Special varieties of rye are also grown in the area, from which traditional bread is made.

Culture and Traditions

Leukerbad is located on the linguistic border between the German-speaking and French-speaking parts of Switzerland, which contributes to its cultural diversity. This is felt in the cuisine, architecture, and traditions.

•Cuisine: Cholera is a traditional dish from Valais – a savory pie with potatoes, leeks, apples, and cheese. Its name comes from the time of epidemics when people cooked with whatever they had left in their cellars. Raclette and fondue are a must for every table. The wines from the Rhone Valley, especially from the Fendant variety, are famous throughout Switzerland.

•Traditions: Every year in the summer, the Sheep Festival is held, during which thousands of sheep gather on the Gemmi Pass. It is a colorful festival with music, dancing, and local specialties.

Ski Schools and Children's Programs

Leukerbad is suitable for families with children, although the slopes of Torrent are more challenging. The Sportarena children's snow park offers a safe environment for the first steps in skiing, with a small lift and entertainers. The Official Swiss Snow Sports School of Leukerbad offers courses for all ages and levels, from beginners to experts, as well as lessons in snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and telemark. The thermal baths also have children's areas with slides and entertainment, which makes them a favorite place for children after a day on the slopes.
