History and Concept

Founded in 1978, Ballenberg was created with the mission to preserve and showcase traditional rural architecture and way of life in Switzerland. Over 100 original buildings from the 16th to the 19th century were carefully dismantled from their original locations and reconstructed in the museum. The 66-hectare site is divided into zones representing the different regions of Switzerland.
