History and Significance
The Lion Monument was created in memory of the tragic events of August 10, 1792, when around 700-1,000 Swiss Guards died during the Storming of the Tuileries Palace in Paris during the French Revolution. The Swiss Guards, who served as the personal guard of the French King Louis XVI, fought with unconditional loyalty and bravery, defending the King's life against the revolutionaries. Although the King ordered them to surrender, many continued to fight and died in battle.
One of the guards, who happened to be on leave in Lucerne on that fateful day, was officer Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen. He spent years mourning the tragic loss of his comrades and initiated the creation of a monument in their honor. Pfyffer proposed the cliff below Wesemlin as a suitable location and raised funds for this major project.
The sculpture of a dying lion, designed by the famous Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen, was realized in just over a year and was inaugurated in 1821. Thorvaldsen, who never visited Lucerne, sent his design to master Lucas Ahorn, who carved the monument into the living rock.
