The Legend of St. Beatus
According to legend, in the 2nd century, the Irish monk Beatus settled in the caves above Lake Thun to live as a hermit. At that time, however, the caves were inhabited by a fire-breathing dragon. St. Beatus confronted the beast with the help of his faith and drove it away. The dragon fell into Lake Thun, causing huge waves. Since then, the caves have borne the saint's name and have been a place of pilgrimage. The tomb of St. Beatus is located near the cave entrance.
