History
Andermatt has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to Roman times. The name of the village comes from "an der Matt" (on the meadow). Its strategic location at the crossroads of the St. Gotthard Pass made it an important trading center as early as the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, the legendary Devil's Bridge was built, which opened the way for intensive trade between north and south. Over the centuries, Andermatt has witnessed numerous historical events – from the passage of Suvorov's Russian troops in 1799 to the development of tourism in the 19th century. The Swiss army had a significant presence in the region, and many of the old military facilities are now converted into museums. In the last 15 years, Andermatt has experienced a true renaissance thanks to large-scale investments in tourism infrastructure, becoming one of the most modern and luxurious Alpine resorts without losing its authentic character.
Economy
The economy of Andermatt is dominated by tourism, which has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. Winter tourism, focused on skiing and snowboarding, is the main pillar, but summer tourism is also growing rapidly with a focus on mountain biking, hiking, and golf. The development of the luxury complex Andermatt Swiss Alps, including 5-star hotels, apartments, and a golf course, has attracted international investors and tourists. Despite modernization, traditional agriculture and animal husbandry continue to play a role in the local economy, with many farms producing high-quality dairy products and meat.
Culture and Traditions
Andermatt preserves its Alpine traditions, despite modern development. The locals are proud of their history and culture. In the summer, the traditional ascent of the cows to the high mountain pastures (Alpaufzug) takes place, accompanied by folk music and dancing. The Ursern Valley Museum (Talmuseum Ursern) tells the history of the region through the centuries. Military history is also an important part of Andermatt's identity – you can visit the old military fortifications and museums. In winter, various cultural events are held, including concerts and festivals. The gastronomy combines traditional Swiss dishes with international cuisine, reflecting the cosmopolitan character of modern Andermatt.
Ski Schools and Children's Programs
Andermatt offers excellent opportunities for training and children's programs. The Swiss Snowsports School Andermatt has highly qualified instructors who speak multiple languages, including English. Group and private lessons are offered for all ages and levels – from the first steps on skis to perfecting freeride technique. For the little ones, there are special children's areas with easy slopes and fun elements. Many of the luxury hotels offer kids' clubs and childcare programs, allowing parents to enjoy the slopes. There are also specialized freeride schools for advanced skiers who want to explore the off-piste terrain safely.
