Lausanne to Lucerne & Mount Pilatus – From the Riviera to the Heart of Switzerland

Your private driver will collect you from your hotel in Lausanne, and within minutes, you’ll leave behind the vineyards of Lavaux — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and begin crossing Switzerland from west to center. The journey reveals changing landscapes: from the calm of Lake Geneva to the rolling hills near Bern, and finally the alpine horizon as you approach Lucerne.

Upon arrival, you’ll explore Lucerne’s Old Town, a masterpiece of medieval architecture and lakeside beauty. The Chapel Bridge, built in 1333, stretches across the Reuss River and is decorated with 17th-century paintings that depict the city’s history. Nearby stands the Water Tower, once a watchtower and treasury. A few minutes away, in a quiet park, lies the Lion Monument, sculpted into rock in memory of the Swiss Guards who fell in 1792 — one of the most emotional landmarks in Europe.

After sightseeing, enjoy a panoramic boat cruise across Lake Lucerne. This one-hour journey reveals the region’s most picturesque side: mountain reflections in clear water, elegant villas, and the shifting light that inspired painters like Turner and Goethe.

Then begins the ascent of Mount Pilatus, known as the “Dragon Mountain.” You can choose between two legendary routes:

• From Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway (available May–November) climbs nearly 1,600 meters in just 30 minutes — the steepest ascent in the world. The red trains wind through meadows, forests, and cliffs before reaching the summit.

• From Kriens, the aerial gondola and cable car operate year-round, gliding over forests and alpine pastures to the top. The last section — the Dragon Ride — offers floor-to-ceiling glass cabins and a thrilling view over Lake Lucerne.

At Pilatus Kulm (2,128 m), the panorama is spectacular. On clear days, you can see as far as the Black Forest and the Jura Mountains. You’ll have time to explore short walking trails, visit the Dragon Trail lookout, and enjoy a meal or coffee at the historic Pilatus Kulm Hotel, open since 1890.

After around two hours on the mountain, descend back to the valley and meet your driver for the comfortable return to Lausanne. The evening ride offers a serene close — the sun setting over the alpine lakes and the first lights of the Lavaux vineyards glowing above Lake Geneva.
