History and Significance
Lake Lucerne is the heart of the Swiss Confederation. According to legend, on the meadow of Rütli on the lakeshore in 1291, representatives of the three cantons Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden swore to defend their freedom and support each other. This is the birth of Switzerland. The legend of William Tell, who escaped from the tyrant Gessler's boat during a storm on the lake, is also connected to Lake Lucerne.
The lake has been an important transport route since the Middle Ages, connecting the northern and southern parts of Switzerland. Today, Lake Lucerne is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, attracting millions of visitors annually.
