Full Tour Description

Your private journey begins in the elegant spa town of Bad Ragaz, known for its healing thermal springs and peaceful mountain scenery. Soon after departure, your driver takes you east into the rolling green hills of Appenzell, one of Switzerland’s most traditional and photogenic regions.

The first stop is Appenzell Village, a place that looks as if it stepped out of a fairytale. Brightly painted houses line the cobblestone streets, each facade decorated with intricate floral and geometric patterns — a tradition unique to this part of the country. The scent of freshly baked bread and alpine cheese fills the air as you stroll through the town square, where locals still greet one another by name. If you wish, stop at a local cheese dairy to sample Appenzeller Käse, a world-famous cheese matured with a secret blend of 30 herbs and mountain spices.

From there, continue to Wasserauen, at the foot of the Appenzell Alps. Here begins the short but unforgettable ascent to Ebenalp via cable car — a 6-minute ride that opens a world of vertical cliffs, alpine meadows and endless views. From the top station, a short mountain trail leads through the Wildkirchli Caves, where prehistoric human traces were discovered and finally emerges onto a ledge that reveals the legendary Aescher Guesthouse.

Built directly into the cliff, this 19th-century inn seems to defy gravity — its wooden balconies clinging to the limestone face like something from a dream. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Switzerland and has been featured by National Geographic as one of the world’s most extraordinary restaurants. Here you can enjoy a traditional alpine lunch or coffee while gazing out across the Seealpsee valley, where cows graze on steep pastures far below. The blend of silence, wind and bells from the valley below makes this place feel timeless.

After descending by cable car, the tour continues to Maienfeld, in the canton of Graubünden — the real-life setting for Johanna Spyri’s classic story Heidi. The drive follows the Rhine Valley, framed by vineyards and forested slopes, until the charming Heidi Village (Heididorf) appears above the town.

At the Heidi House Museum, you’ll see an authentic alpine cottage furnished to reflect the novel’s 19th-century setting. Friendly goats roam nearby and children can explore small barns and paths that mirror scenes from the book. For generations of visitors, it’s been a nostalgic and heartwarming stop — a connection between childhood imagination and real Swiss tradition.

As the afternoon fades, your driver takes you back to Bad Ragaz, following a scenic route through mountain valleys and small farming villages. The gentle descent through green landscapes marks the perfect close to a day that captures everything Switzerland stands for — authenticity, beauty and simplicity.
