History and Significance
Chillon Castle is built on a rocky island on the shores of Lake Geneva. The rock was a natural defense and a strategic position for controlling the road from north to south through Europe (Via Francigena). The castle took on the oval shape of the island on which it was built – approximately 100 meters long and 50 meters wide. The name "Chillon" means "rocky platform" in an ancient language.
The history of the castle is marked by three great periods:
1. Savoy Period (12th-16th centuries)
The castle was built and developed by the House of Savoy. It was both a royal residence and a military fortress. The Counts of Savoy used the castle as a summer residence and administrative center.
2. Bernese Period (16th-18th centuries)
In 1536 Bern conquered the castle and used it as a prison and fortress. Here François Bonivard (1530-1536) was imprisoned, prior of St. Victor's Priory in Geneva, who was chained in the underground dungeons for 6 years.
3. Vaudois Period (18th century-present)
Since 1798 the castle has belonged to the Canton of Vaud. In 1887 the Association for the Restoration of Chillon Castle was founded, which began a major restoration. In 2002 the Chillon Castle Foundation was created, which manages the castle as a museum and cultural monument.

Lord Byron and "The Prisoner of Chillon"
In 1816 the English poet Lord Byron visited Chillon Castle and was deeply impressed by the story of François Bonivard, who was imprisoned in the underground dungeons for 6 years (1530-1536). Byron wrote the famous poem "The Prisoner of Chillon", which made the castle world-famous.
In the poem Byron describes the sufferings of Bonivard, chained to a pillar in the dungeon, and his struggle for freedom. The poem turned Chillon Castle into a symbol of the struggle for freedom and attracted thousands of visitors from around the world.
Today the castle has Café Byron – a restaurant named after the poet, where you can enjoy a gourmet break.
