Full Tour Description
The journey begins in Konstanz, on the tranquil shores of Lake Constance. As you leave the city and cross into the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, the landscape begins to rise into soft green hills — the unmistakable prelude to Appenzell country. The drive, around three hours, passes through postcard villages, grazing pastures, and wooden farmhouses painted in the traditional Appenzell style.
Your first stop is the village of Appenzell, capital of Switzerland’s smallest canton and one of its most culturally distinct regions. Here, traditions are not staged — they are lived. Colorful façades tell stories from the 18th century; cows still parade through the streets after alpine summers, and residents greet each other in the local Alemannic dialect. You’ll have time to stroll through the Landsgemeindeplatz, one of the last public squares in Switzerland where citizens still vote by a show of hands. Small shops offer the famous Appenzeller cheese, matured in herbal brine according to a secret 700-year-old recipe, and local liquors such as “Appenzeller Alpenbitter.”
From Appenzell, the tour continues to Wasserauen, the valley station for the Ebenalp cable car. The ascent is short but spectacular, gliding above meadows filled with wildflowers and views that open toward the Säntis massif. At the top, a walking trail leads through the Wildkirchli Cave complex, once used by Neanderthal hunters and later as a hermit chapel in the 17th century.
Emerging from the caves, you’ll suddenly see it — the Aescher Guesthouse, clinging to the vertical cliff of the Ebenalp at 1,454 meters above sea level. It’s one of the most surreal sights in Switzerland: a mountain inn built directly into the rock, accessible only on foot. The guesthouse dates back to the 19th century and has become world-famous for its extraordinary location, rustic simplicity, and breathtaking terrace.
You’ll have several hours to enjoy lunch or refreshments at the restaurant, explore short nearby trails, or simply sit on the balcony watching paragliders and ibex along the cliffs. Every direction offers a new view — the rolling green valleys below, the peaks of Säntis above, and the faint glimmer of Lake Constance in the distance.
The descent by cable car offers another chance to take in the panorama before meeting your driver at the valley station. On the return to Konstanz, the drive winds gently through Appenzellerland, where alpine pastures and bell sounds accompany you all the way back to the lake. By evening, you’ll have seen both the quiet traditions of Appenzell and one of the most extraordinary viewpoints in the Swiss Alps.
