Full Tour Description
Your private driver will pick you up in Montreux, and the day begins along the peaceful Lake Geneva Riviera, where palm trees and terraced vineyards paint the hillsides. The route follows the Rhône Valley, passing through Aigle and Sion, the oldest continuously inhabited town in Switzerland, crowned by its twin castles — Tourbillon and Valère Basilica.
Beyond Visp, the road climbs toward the Mattertal Valley, where the scenery changes dramatically: pine forests grow denser, waterfalls crash from cliffs, and snow-capped peaks dominate the skyline. After about 3 hours and 45 minutes, you’ll reach Täsch, the final point accessible by car.
From Täsch, board the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for a scenic 15-minute ride to Zermatt. This short journey alone captures Switzerland’s essence — wooden barns on the slopes, glacial streams, and the first distant glimpse of the Matterhorn.
Upon arrival in Zermatt, time slows down. No cars, no traffic — only the sound of church bells, footsteps on cobblestones, and the faint hum of electric taxis. The village, sitting at 1,620 meters, is both sophisticated and authentic — where mountaineering legends meet modern luxury.
Walk along Bahnhofstrasse, Zermatt’s elegant main street, lined with Swiss watch boutiques, artisan chocolate shops, and cozy alpine cafés. A short stroll leads to the Kirchbrücke Viewpoint, offering the postcard-perfect view of the Matterhorn rising above wooden rooftops — a sight that has inspired climbers and travelers for over a century.
If you choose to ascend, the Gornergrat Railway awaits. This historic cogwheel train, operating since 1898, climbs 1,469 meters in just 30 minutes to reach Gornergrat (3,089 m). From the summit platform, the view of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa Massif is unmatched — 29 peaks over 4,000 meters visible at once, including the Dufourspitze, Switzerland’s highest mountain. The Kulmhotel Gornergrat, Europe’s highest hotel, offers panoramic dining and an observatory that studies the stars above this sea of snow.
Alternatively, take the Sunnegga Funicular — a fast underground lift rising to 2,288 meters in just five minutes. Here, the Leisee Lake perfectly mirrors the Matterhorn’s triangular peak, making it a favorite photo spot. Those seeking greater heights can continue with the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car — Europe’s highest station at 3,883 meters — where visitors can explore the Glacier Palace, an ice cave sculpted into the glacier itself.
Back in the village, you may enjoy lunch in a mountain chalet or terrace restaurant overlooking the peaks. Zermatt’s culinary scene ranges from rustic alpine huts to world-class gourmet experiences like Chez Vrony or Findlerhof.
As the afternoon light softens, return to Täsch by train, where your driver will be waiting for the comfortable ride back to Montreux. The descent through the Rhône Valley is calm and reflective — vineyards, castles, and sunset tones over Lake Geneva complete your alpine journey.
