A History of an Engineering Feat
The idea for a railway to the summit of the Jungfrau was born in 1893 in the mind of the Swiss industrialist Adolf Guyer-Zeller. Construction began in 1896 and lasted 16 years, during which 30 workers died. The line was officially opened on August 1, 1912, and has since been one of the biggest tourist attractions in Switzerland. 7 of the 9.3 kilometers of the line pass through a tunnel carved into the rock of the Eiger and Mönch – a true marvel of engineering for its time.
